Driven to Distraction?
It's not just the thunder of lorries that should make you nervous on Britains motorways...
You'd think that Britains scariest road would be some ancient, tree lined lane in the middle of nowhere. In fact, some of our most modern motorways are veritable highways of haunting!
This is because many motorways follow the path of ancient Roman roads and old country lanes. According to statistics, 45% of drivers claim they have seen something paranormal on their journeys. So the next time someone tells you that they're a nervous driver, they may not be talking about their lack of confidence in their ability behind the wheel, but a fear of hitch-hikers from hell...
Cold Shoulder
The M1 in Northern Ireland has a ghostly female hitch-hiker who seeks a lift on the stretch of road between Belfast and Hillsborough.
The young woman is dresssed in a winter coat, but has no bag or gloves. Many drivers have picked her up and found her to be strangely silent. After a while they have also noticed a cold chill circulate through their vehicle. When they turn to ask their guest if they are also chilly, they realise that she has mysteriously vanished into thin air.
Drivers who have reported this incident to the police are told that they are not the only ones to have such a spooky experience.
Apparently, she is the ghost of a young woman who was killed on that stretch of road many years earlier. paramedics forgot to pick up the dead girls bag and gloves, which were left on the hard shoulder by mistake.
Now the restless spirit of the tragic woman comes back time and time again searching for her lost possessions, and trying to find her way home.
Distress Signal
Drivers on the M6 have been astonished to see a woman walking along the middle of the slow lane, trying to stop cars. She appears very distressed and waves her arms around as if desperate for help.
Horrified drivers who have been about to hit her have watched her disappear before their very eyes on the point of collision.
A couple of compassionate souls have even pulled onto the hard shoulder to try to help. But once they stopped their car, they realised she'd gone.
It is said they she was involved in a terrible car crash with her children. With the car upside down and on fire, the woman staggered along the carriageway seeking help.
Because she was suffering from concussion, she didn't realise what terrible danger she was in and was hit by a car and killed instantly.
Miner's Strike
On the stretch of motorway that pesses by Greater Manchester, people have reported seeing sets of glowing eyes that peero out from the bushes at the side of the road.
This happens near leigh, which was the site of a terrible mining disaster back in 1908. On 18th August, an explosion claimed the lives of 75 people. many heroic resuers tried to reach the men trapped below ground, but without success.
It is said that the glowing eyes belong to the dead miners who, not realising they're dead, are still trying to find their way out.
Soldiering On
The M6 runs between Rugby in Warwikshire and Carlisle in Cumbria, and is the longest motorway in the UK. It is also the most haunted.
Drivers on the Birmingham section have seen a Roman legion marching right at them. The soldiers are said to pass right through the cars. One driver swerved to avoid the men and lost control of his car, ending up in a field. Luckily he was unharmed.
Some see the soldiers as shadows, from the waist up. Do they tread the road that was once at a lower level than todays motorway?
Automatic Driver
Over the years, police have received numerous reports from drivers about a lorry travelling in the worng direction along the M6.
Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene in anticipation of a pile up. but when they arrive, they find no sign of the wayward lorry.
Some drivers who've spotted the lorry have even pointed out that they can't even see anyone behind the wheel. Despite being spied by scores of people, the lorry has never shown up on CCTV.
Child Crossing
The M2 in Kent is also an isolated and lonely stretch of road. There are few lights to be seen as you drive along, so it can feel like the rest of the world has vanished.
Many drivers have slammed on the brakes while driving in the area near Chatham. Some claim to have seen a young girl, aged around 12 and dressed in white, dashing across the carriageway in front of them. One woman said that she closed her eyes to avoid seeing the impact. When she openened them again, she realised there was no one there.
The girls clothes are Victorian in style, and like many of the ghosts on our modern roads, she appears to float along a path from a time long ago.
